Performing Arts
As part of the various programmes we offer for the youth of Namuwongo we have added Performing Arts as an area of focus. Although academics tend to be the focus of our programmes, we firmly believe in providing youth with the environment and opportunity that will allow them to access their creative side. Twice a week, the Undugu Family Performers come to instruct the children in our Afternoon Youth Programme in traditional singing, dancing, and instruments. With Undugu, the children also learn about their culture, as this knowledge is easily lost in the slums of Kampala.
During the Afternoon Youth Programme, Saturday Reading Club and Holiday Programme, the children often write and perform their own dramas in front of their peers. Some of the children have even had the opportunity to perform their dramas in front of other youth from different organisations as part of an awareness campaign for various social issues concerning youth. We believe that providing youth with the opportunity to be creative and express themselves in front of others will boost their confidence and give them a sense of pride for what they have accomplished.
